Herpes: Understanding HSV-1 and HSV-2, Symptoms, and Home Testing
Share
Herpes is one of the most common viral infections in the world. The World Health Organization estimates that over 500 million people globally are living with genital herpes (HSV-2), and billions more carry oral herpes (HSV-1). Despite its prevalence, herpes remains one of the most stigmatized and misunderstood STIs.
HSV-1 vs HSV-2: What's the Difference?
HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1)
Traditionally associated with oral herpes (cold sores around the mouth), HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes through oral-genital contact. It is extremely common — studies suggest up to 67% of people under 50 carry HSV-1, most without ever knowing.
HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2)
HSV-2 is the primary cause of genital herpes. It is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity. Crucially, transmission can occur even when no visible sores are present — this is known as asymptomatic shedding.
Symptoms of Herpes
Many people with herpes experience mild or no symptoms, making it easy to unknowingly pass the virus to others.
When symptoms do appear, they may include:
- Blisters or sores around the mouth, genitals, or anal area
- Tingling, itching, or burning sensation before an outbreak
- Painful urination
- Flu-like symptoms during the first outbreak (fever, swollen glands, body aches)
How Is Herpes Transmitted?
HSV-2 spreads through direct skin contact with an infected area — during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Condoms reduce but do not eliminate the risk, since they don't cover all potentially infected skin.
Living with Herpes
While herpes has no cure, antiviral medications can reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks and significantly lower the risk of transmission to partners. Many people with herpes live full, normal lives and maintain healthy relationships.
Why Testing Matters
Knowing your status is the first step to managing herpes responsibly. Testing allows you to have honest conversations with partners, access treatment if needed, and protect your long-term health.
